In the NGO world, there are the big names in relief and development that are well known by most aid workers. But can you name the top 10 with the most funding? (Maybe you'll work for one of these someday.) I bet you don’t know them all. (I didn’t either!)
Surprisingly, there are a couple NGOs with billion dollar budgets, which are unknown to most of us NGO workers.
Who are they? Have a look below:
NGO Est Budget ($) Main Focus
1) Red Cross/Red Crescent $33 Billion Humanitarian/Emergency
2) World Vision Intl. $5.4 Billion Child Sponsorship/Development
3) Save the Children $3 Billion Child Rights/Emergency
4) MSF-Drs. Without Borders $2.5 Billion Medical Humanitarian
5) SOS Children’s Villages $1.7 Billion Family-based Child Care
6) Catholic Relief Services $1.6 Billion Development
7) BRAC $1.4 Billion Poverty/Social Enterprise
8) Compassion Intl. $1.2 Billion Child Sponsorship
9) ChildFund Alliance $1.1 Billion Child Sponsorship/Development
10) Oxfam Confederation $1.1 Billion Advocacy/Poverty/Emergency
Here’s important info on these 10.
First, there’s the Red Cross/Red Crescent. One of their staff once told me that it is not really an NGO, because in some countries, they’re mandated to do some functions under the government (like various types of disaster response, for example.) Separately, in some countries, (like China and North Korea for example) it can’t be completely called a “Non-Governmental Organization”, since it is more or less controlled by the governments in those countries. However in most other countries, it is mostly independent of governments. So for the purposes of this list, Red Cross/Red Crescent will remain included.
Another point about budgets, is that this list is about funding, not about total resources. Many ‘gifts-in-kind’ and other donated items, (which overall total hundreds of millions in value,) are not included, as they aren’t a monetary donation. Again, the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement would win in this category. They get the most donated items, mainly for emergency relief.
3 of the top 10, are focused on child sponsorship. These include World Vision International, Compassion International, and ChildFund Alliance. You may say, “but what about Save the Children?” Well, Save the Children began to discontinue child sponsorship, starting back in 2024. Add SOS Chldren’s Villages to this group, and you have 5 of the top 10 NGOs focusing on children. Given that children are often the most vulnerable in this world, it’s a program area with vast needs.
One NGO that was begun in a ‘southern’ country, is BRAC. Their acronym used to stand for, “Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee”. Then it was changed to “Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee”. Today its simply known as “BRAC”. Their programs are in over a dozen countries across Asia and Africa. Their international arm now has its HQ in The Hague in the Netherlands.
Next, you may not have heard of Compassion International. (I hadn’t.) It was originally founded by a Christian evangelist during the Korean War, to help Korean orphans. It later expanded to other continents, and is now based in Colorado in the USA. Add World Vision International, and that makes 2 of the top 10 as faith based, Christian charities supporting children and their families.
And finally, while you may not have heard of “ChildFund Alliance”, you more likely heard of its former name, “Christian Children’s Fund”. (Their fund raising commercials were a staple of American TV for years.) They rebranded, and changed the name to reflect their non-sectarian work for children.
And where do they get all of those billions in funding, you might ask?
That’s a subject for a future post.
